Research Paper of the Year

Recognising original clinical research that has contributed significantly to improving health and health care
Eligibility
To be eligible the research paper you are entering needs to be:
- Published after 1st January 2009, open to papers published internationally as well as in the UK
- Published in English or the author to cover cost of translation
Judging criteria
The expert panel of judges will be looking for a research paper that most demonstrates:
- Clear potential to help doctors make better decisions about clinical practice, public health, research methodology, or health policy
- Potential to improve health outcomes for patients and/or populations
- An important addition to previous knowledge
- Scientific robustness
- International relevance
Entry requirements
An email including:
- 500 words listing each of the judging criteria and explaining why this research paper meets them
- The abstract of the paper and its full citation/reference
- Attachment of the full research paper being nominated

Getting Research into Practice (GRiP)

Eligibility
- Open to organisations/teams worldwide
- Project or initiative must have been completed after 1st January 2008
Judging criteria
The panel of expert judges will be looking for the evidence based project or initiative that:
- Tackles an important health issue (in terms of burden of disease or health inequalities)
- Shows measurable improvements in outcomes that are important to patients
- Uses innovative methods of either research or implementation
- Takes a valid evidence based approach

- 500 words on why the individual/team/organisation should win
- Supporting documentation

Primary Care Team of the Year

Recognising practices that demonstrate improved outcomes in disease management.
Eligibility
- Open to GP practices in the UK only
- Team projects or initiatives must have been demonstrated after 1st January 2008
Judging criteria
- Identifies a clinical need within the patient base / local population
- Shows measurable improvements in outcomes that are important to patients
- Demonstrates evidence of shared responsibility within the team for the achievement of goals
- Used innovative methods of implementation and use of resource

Secondary Care Team of the Year

Recognising hospital teams that demonstrate improved outcomes of medical and surgical conditions.
Eligibility
- Open to hospital/secondary care teams in the UK only
- Team projects or initiatives must have been demonstrated after 1st January 2008
Judging criteria
The panel of expert judges will be looking for the team that:
- Shows measurable improvements in outcomes that are important to patients
- Demonstrates evidence of shared responsibility within the team for the achievement of goals
- Demonstrates innovation, teamwork, quality and effective use of resources
We encourage entries of team initiatives implemented within the organisation’s existing resources

Junior Doctor of the Year

- Open to non-consultant, non-career grade doctors only (Staff grade and associate specialist doctors)

Judging criteria
- The panel of expert judges will be looking for an individual who:
- Demonstrates an exceptional portfolio of work and initiatives - or has overcome exceptional challenges

Recognising an individual or team who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and/or innovation in healthcare education and performance improvement.
Eligibility
- Only open to individuals who are UK resident or teams which are UK based
Judges will particularly take into account the impact of relevant initiatives and services that were reported during the period January 2008 to December 2009
Judging criteria
The expert panel of judges will be looking for the projects, initiatives or publications that most demonstrate:
- Measurable impact on improving healthcare education and outcomes through education practice, policy or research
- Innovation in objectives and methods
- A commitment to evaluation
- Successful communication and dissemination

Best Quality Improvement

Recognising teams making measurable improvements to the quality and safety of health care.
Eligbility
- Open to UK based organisations/teams only
- Initiative to have been implemented after 1st July 2007
Judging criteria
The panel of expert judges will be looking for the project or initiative that most demonstrates:
- A clear description of the strategy for quality improvement
- A measurable improvement in effectiveness, safety, and/or patient experience, as evidenced by an improvement in outcomes that matters to patients (for effectiveness and safety: morbidity or mortality; for patient experience, validated survey instruments or other tools) sustained for at least 18 months or developed into further improvements
- Extension of the initiative, for example, improvement in other outcomes in the same unit or extension of the original improvement to more units in the same organisation/system
- Novelty either of objectives or approach
- Real linkage between organisational change and clinical benefit
- Overcoming of barriers to change
Entry requirements
- 600 words describing the improvement in a structured format
- Supporting documentation with results covering period 1 July 2008 – present

- 250 words outlining the challenges faced by the nominee, and the strategies they implemented to bring about change
- 250 words describing how they influenced and engaged those around them as a leader

Judging criteria
The expert panel of judges will be looking for the organisation that has most demonstrated:
- A strong and consistent commitment to social responsibility
- A positive impact on the environment, the extended community, or society at large
- Effective ethical sourcing along the supply chain
- Effective engagement with stakeholders and others
- Actions and impact that go beyond the organisation’s commercial or strategic development needs

- Supporting documentation/data as to how the initiative has made a difference

Health Communicator of the Year

Celebrating an individual who has shown excellence in promoting understanding of medicine and health through the media.
Eligibility
- Open to UK residents only
- Anyone who has published/broadcast information about medicine/health aimed at the general public after 1st January 2008
- Excludes work promoting a commercial interest and anything published in BMJ
Judging criteria
The expert panel of judges will be looking for an individual whose writing or broadcasting most demonstrates:
- Impact on the public understanding of medicine/health
- Potential to change the way people think about an important issue
- Imaginative and effective methods of communication that are appropriate for the intended audience
- Balance and accuracy
- An evidence base where appropriate

- 500 words on why the individual should win
- Attachment of the piece of published work or a link to the broadcast work being entered

BMJ Group Award for Lifetime Achievement
Champion: Annabel Ferriman, News Editor, BMJ
For the individual who has, over his or her working lifetime, made a unique and substantial contribution to improving health care, whether in clinical practice, health services, public health, health policy, medical education, or medical research.
Eligibility
- Open to individuals only
- Open to UK and international entrants
Judging criteria
- A shortlist will be drawn up by an expert panel of judges.
- The winner of this award will then be chosen by BMJ readers via an online poll
