56 Dean Street, Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, London, England
In an attempt to reduce the prevalence of undiagnosed HIV infection, 56 Dean Street developed a walk-in, testing service, which guarantees HIV test results within the hour. The state-of-the-art premises in Soho, London, counts 50 gay venues within a 500 m radius and is therefore close to major reservoirs of undiagnosed HIV infection.
Diabetic Retinopathy Team, Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro, England
Thanks to a mobile eye screening unit diabetic patients no longer have to trek miles for their annual appointment: retinal photography can now be performed in the remotest village. Once sight threatening retinopathy has been identified patients are rapidly referred for specialist medical and surgical care.
Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS), Glasgow, Scotland
The Emergency Medical Retrieval Service has transformed the care of seriously ill and injured patients in rural Scotland. It provides support to rural clinicians as well as access to critical care consultants who can assist with onsite assessment and treatment before patients are airlifted to hospitals for definitive care.
Heart Attack and Stroke Team, Royal Free Hospital, London, England
Recognising the clinical synergies between acute “heart attack” and “brain attack”, the hospital’s departments of cardiology and neurology integrated their primary angioplasty and stroke thrombolysis services. Patients are given direct access to the service, thus minimising treatment delays.
