Judges 2012

Research Paper of the Year


Haleema ShakurHaleema Shakur - Senior Lecturer at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Haleema's primary research focus is in the conduct of clinical trials in critical emergency conditions.  She had a lead role in the CRASH-2 trial which was the winner of the 2011 BMJ Research Paper of the Year Award. Her research include the MRC-CRASH trial of corticosteroid in traumatic brain injury,  the BRAIN Trial an early phase trial looking at the effect of bradykinin B2 receptor antagonist as a treatment for traumatic brain injury. Currently she is leading the global WOMAN Trial which is looking at the effect of tranexamic acid as a treatment for postpartum haemorrhage.

 

Improvement in Patient Safety


Dinesh SelvarajahDinesh Selvarajah -  Honorary Consultant Diabetologist and Senior Research Scientist at the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (2009 - present).

Dinesh graduated from the University of Sheffield where he continued his medical training.. He is part of the diabetes and endocrine team at Sheffield, providing both general diabetes and internal medicine services. He headed the diabetes workstream on the Trust's Patient Safety initiative and contributed to the introduction of the 'Think
Glucose' campaign. His main research interest is in neuroimaging and diabetes and structured education models in painful neuropathy.

Fiona Moss Dr. Fiona Moss CBE - Director of Medical and Dental Education Commissioning for London.

Fiona is editor of the Postgraduate Medical Journal and a member of the Royal Society of Medicine Press Board. She also sits on the Editorial Board of the BMJ.  In 2006 Fiona was awarded a CBE for services to medicine.

Helen has worked in the field of healthcare improvement at local, national and international level,leading and supporting initiatives that have benefited millions of patients. . In 2008, the 60th anniversary of the NHS, Helen was named as one of the 60 most influential people in the history of the NHS and in 2010 was named as one of the top 10 NHS opinion formers.
 

Clinical Commissioning Team of the Year

 
Dame Barbara HakinDame Barbara Hakin - National Managing Director of Commissioning Development responsible for overseeing development of the new commissioning architecture.

Dame Barbarawas previously Chief Executive of the NHS in the East Midlands.  Prior to this she was a PCT Chief Executive in Bradford, Interim Director General of Commissioning in the Department of Health and Director of Primary Care in the Modernisation Agency. Barbara is well known for her role in the development of clinical commissioning, in particular the redesign of services to move care into the community and primary care setting. She has also championed services to reduce inequalities and promoting the equality and diversity agenda at both local and national level. Dame Barbara was awarded an OBE in 2000 and a DBE in 2008.

 ★ James KingslandDr James Kingsland - National Clinical Commissioning Network Lead funded by the Dept of Health

James is also a Senior Partner and GP trainer in an award winning Personal Medical Services partnership in Wallasey, his practice being part of a first wave Clinical Commissioning Consortia Pathfinder. In his current role  he supports the country-wide development and implementation of Clinical Commissioning.
He is also President of the National Association of Primary Care and part of the NHS Top Leaders programme of the National Leadership Council. He has also been a GP advisor to the Department of Health on a number of policy areas over the last 12 years including an appointment as a personal advisor to Lord Darzi for the Next Stage Review. 

Paul Zollinger ReadPaul Zollinger-Read

A GP by training, Paul set up and became Chief Executive of the Braintree Care Trust for adult social careIn 2006 he became Chief Executive of North East Essex and in 2009 Chief Executive of Great Yarmouth PCT, continuing in his joint GP and leadership role. In January 2010 he became Chief Executive of NHS Cambridgeshire and also assumed the role of Chief Executive of NHS Peterborough. Following the publication of the White Paper Paul was appointed the East of England SHA Director responsible for the implementation of GP Commissioning. In 2011 Paul was made the Medical Advisor and Lead on Primary care to the Kings Fund.

Felicity HarveyDr Felicity Harvey
- Director, the Performance and Reform Unit

Felicity was appointed as the Director of the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit in 2009.  As part of the Strategic Review in HM Treasury, the Unit was merged and re-branded to become the Performance and Reform Unit in 2011. Felicity was formerly  Director of the Medicines, Pharmacy & Industry Group in the Department of Health for six years.  Previous positions include Director of Prison Health for HM Prison Service and Head of Quality Management for the NHS Executive.  Felicity has also held clinical academic posts in medical microbiology at King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry and The Royal London Hospital Medical College. 
 

Stephen WhiteheadStephen Whitehead - Chief Executive of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI)

Stephen is the chief advocate for the research-based pharmaceutical industry in the UK and joins at a key period of change and modernisation. Stephen sits on the ABPI Board of Management and is responsible for all aspects of the ABPI’s work.  He is set to lead the industry’s pricing negotiation of medicines with the Department of Health next year. He has a strong commitment to the pharmaceutical industry and earlier in his career spent ten years at Glaxo and Lilly, at UK, European and international levels.  Stephenalso worked in senior roles in alcohol policy and financial services with Diageo PLC, Barclays PLC and Prudential PLC. 

Steven LaitnerDr Steven Laitner - MBBS, MSc, DCH, MRCP (UK), MRCGP, MFPHM

Steven is a GP in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and a Public Health Consultant. He is an Associate Medical Director for NHS Midlands and East, and the National Clinical Lead for Shared Decision Making as part of the National DH QIPP Right Care work stream. Steven’s medical interests also include care pathways, demand management, long term conditions, patient empowerment and patient leadership.

Fiona GodleeDr. Fiona Godlee - Editor in chief of the BMJ

Fiona qualified as a doctor in 1985, trained as a general physician in Cambridge and London, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Since joining the BMJ in 1990, and later becoming Editor in Chief in 2005, she has written on a broad range of issues and led the development of the BMJ Group's Knowledge division.


Hamish MeldrumHamish Meldrum - BSc, MBChB, DRCOG, FRCGP, FRCP Ed
Chairman, BMA Council

Hamish started his medical career in general medicine, , before moving to general practice in Bridlington, , where he was a GP for over thirty years. He was involved in the Local Medical Committee (LMC) in the 1980s, before joining the General Practitioners Committee (GPC) in 1991 following the imposition of the Kenneth Clarke (the then Secretary of State for Health) contract. He was Chairman of East Yorkshire LMC from 1996-99. Hamish  was part of the GPC team that negotiated the new GP contract, being Deputy Chairman from 1999-2004 and Chairman of the GPC from 2004-07. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners and of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

Andrew is a Project Analyst working for AdminRe UK, a Life Company in Hertfordshire. Prior to this he studied Mathematics and Computing at Plymouth University. Following the tragic death of his sister, Dr Karen Woo, family and friends founded the Karen Woo Foundation in her memory, to continue her aim of providing healthcare and education to some of the poorest people in the world. Inspired by Karen's enthusiasm, he wanted to act to make a difference and believe the Karen Woo Foundation, working with other organisations, can help support sustainable projects with a long term legacy.

Ian CurranDr Ian Curran - Dean of Educational Excellence & Head of Innovation  at the London Deanery.

Dr Curran is a consultant anaesthetist with sub-specialty interest in chronic pain management at St Bartholomew's Hospital where he is also Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medical Education as well as  Senior Examiner at the Barts & The London School of Medicine  and Dentistry. He is also a council member of the Academy of Medical Educators, Chair of the Professional Standards Committee and a Board Director of the US based Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
Ian is Clinical Lead for London's award-winning Simulation and Technology-enhanced Learning Initiative (STeLI), a flagship project of NHS London's workforce development strategy.


Ken Calman 2Sir Kenneth Calman - Chairman of the National Trust for Scotland

Sir Kenneth Calman is Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, President of the Institute of medical Ethics and Deputy Chair of the British Library Board. He has also Chaired the Commission on Scottish Devolution and was a previous President of the British Medical Association. He is now Chairman of the National Trust for Scotland.



Professor Parveen Kumar Professor Parveen Kumar - President, Royal Society of Medicine, Professor of Medicine and Education , Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary, University of London

Professor Kumar has a major interest in Education; she developed and co-edits the textbook Clinical Medicine, as well as many other books.. Her major research interest is in Coeliac disease and small bowel disorders. She  has been a Director of Post Graduate Medical Education and also Director of Continuing Professional Development at the Royal College of Physicians.In the past she has been  President of the BMA,  Vice President of the RCP, Chairman of the Medicines Commission UK, Non-executive director of NICE and other bodies.

 

Clinical Leader of the Year


Ian DuftonDr Ian Dufton - Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and the Clinical Lead of the Bolton Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

Ian has been clinical lead since 2009 and has led the service through a challenging period of rebuilding and then ongoing redesign and continuous improvement. Over that time the service has been shortlisted and won a number of awards and he himself won the BMJ group Clinical Leader of the Year Award in May of last year. He is an advocate of LEAN management principles and believes that they support the effective engagement of clinicians resulting in the delivery of quality clinical services. His special interests are in the early onset of psychosis and cognitive behaviour therapy.

Pam GarsidePam Garside - Fellow in Health Management, Judge Business School University of Cambridge

Pam is Senior Associate of the Nuffield Trust, Board Director of the International Women’s Forum Leadership Foundation in Washington DC and member of the Advisory Board of Doctors.net.uk.  She has her own management consultancy, Newhealth, specialising in organisational strategy and development in health care, and works extensively with boards of a wide range of health care organisations on leadership, governance and strategy issues.

Sam is a GP in the East End of London in a health centre used by the government as a model for “Healthy Living Centres” and NHS Lift premises. It was formally designated by Government as a ‘Healthy Living Centre’ in 2000 and achieved Beacon Status in 2001. In 2003 it was designated by government as a national “Children’s Centre”. Sam was previously Deputy Chair of the British Medical Association, is a Director of Community Health Partnerships (NHS Lift) and a qualified Barrister.

 

Healthcare Communication Campaign


Mark DumanDr Mark Duman -
a pharmacist by profession, is an independent consultant who strives to improve patient experience and outcomes through better communication.

Within the King’s Fund he founded the Ask About Medicines campaign and published ‘Producing Patient Information’.   In the BBC he delivered a range of initiatives to motivate people to improve their health and lifestyle.  Following subsequent roles in the publishing and telecoms sectors, Mark has worked with clients including AstraZeneca, Central Office of Information, Department of Health, Microsoft, NHS Direct, Novartis, Picker Europe, Scholl and Tunstall Group. He contributes to various public and commercial Advisory and Editorial Boards, is a member of the Self Care Forum, and Chair of the Patient Information Forum. 

Klim McPhersonProfessor Klim McPherson - MVisiting professor of public health epidemiology at Oxford University and Fellow of New College.

Klim chairs the National Heart Forum, concerned to prevent premature mortality from cardiovascular disease. His research is in epidemiological methods and women’s’ health. He was co-author of the Foresight Report on Tackling Obesities. With the National Heart Forum he leadsa research group examining the role of micro simulation in better understanding public health interventions. He has chaired the British Breast Group, the European Public Health Association and the Society for Social Medicine amongst other research bodies.

Tim Brabants profileTim Brabants -
British Olympic Kayaker

Tim has  represented Britain in international kayak events since winning bronze in the World Junior Championships in 1995, and has participated in three Olympic Games, achieving i one gold and two bronze medals., Upon his return from the Beijing Olympics he resumed work at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham for 18 months where he practices as an Accident andEmergency doctor.He put his medical career on hold again in 2010, to commit to training full time for his fourth Olympics in London, where he will attempt to defend his Beijing Olympic gold medal.

★ Graham Holloway - MB ChB FRCS FISM FFSEM(Ire) FFSEM(UK)

Qualified Liverpool 1969.  Joined the RAF 1972 and appointed Consultant in Orthopaedic Surgery 1982. Member of the Executive Committee and Education tutor for the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine 1990-1996. From 1992 he worked exclusively with sports injuries and sports medicine, developing a multidisciplinary problem clinic. He was orthopaedic advisor to Team GB at the 2000 Olympics. Special interests include groin injuries, compartment syndromes, stress fractures and knee ligament injuries. He retired in 2011 to devote more time to golf, tennis, badminton, cycling and offshore sailing.

Dr Rick SeahDr Rick Seah - FFSEM(UK) Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine, English Institute of Sport & Pure Sports Medicine Clinic and Honorary Sports Physician, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Rick graduated from Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals Medical School in 1999 and obtained his master's degree from University College London in 2005.  He is a GMC-accredited SEM specialist, having completed the 4-year London Deanery ‘run-through’ specialty training rotation. His StR postings include the Royal London, Whittington, University College, Homerton, St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals; RNOH Stanmore and the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court.
 

Junior Doctor of the Year


Clare Gerada Dr. Clare Gerada - Chair, Royal College of General Practitioners

Dr Clare Gerada is the first female Chair of the RCGP in 50 yearsClare trained in medicine, then psychiatry before becoming a GP. Her training in psychiatry led to a life-long interest in managing drug users – and she represented the Department of Health (England) advising the Maltese Government on their drug policy. She has held a number of national leadership positions, including Director of Primary Care for the National Clinical Governance Team and Senior Medical Advisor to the Department of Health. Clare was awarded an MBE in the Millennium Birthday Honours for services to medicine and substance misuse.

 ★ Dan MagnusDr Dan Magnus - - paediatric registrar with an interest in Global Child Health, lecturer in Maternal and Child Health and co-founder of Kenyan Orphan Project

Dan won the award for BMJ Junior Doctor of the Year in 2011. He is a co-founder of Kenyan Orphan Project - a successful charity working in western Kenya on child health and education projects linked to global child health programmes for students in the UK.
His main interest is in translating the evidence for global child health interventions into practice and in promoting global child health education for students. He is currently studying for the MSc Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Shree DattaDr. Shree Datta - BMA's Junior Doctors Committee (JDC), Co-Chairman

Having chaired the BMA's Junior Doctor Committee for two years, Shree is now a final year trainee in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in London. She instigated the popular "Know your contract, know your rights" campaign for UK junior doctors in 2009 and organised a national conference on the EWTD in 2010. Shree believes passionately in high quality education and training for doctors and providing the best care possible for patients.

Jon HoeksmaJon Hoeksma - Editor and co-founder of eHealth Insider, established in 2001.

Jon is an editor and journalist with in-depth experience of healthcare, business and technology reporting and has a keen interest in the potential of web 2.0 technologies in health and publishing. In 2011 Jon led EHI’s successful national campaign for the appointment of Chief Clinical Information Officers in the NHS, now being established as a CCIO Leaders Network. Before entering journalism, Jon was an NHS graduate trainee and  graduated in politics from the University of Warwick.

Stella_DuttonStella Dutton - CEO, BMJ Group

Stella joined the BMJ Group as Executive Director, with responsibility for business and operational issues, in 1996, and became CEO in 2004. Before joining BMJ Group she worked for Reed International as Publishing Director for their Science Division. She has also been the Director of Publications at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. Stella has a Chemistry degree from London University and lives in Surrey.
